 My Areas:

An interview with John:

So John, what do you do?
My role as President is to ensure that you are fairly represented on all areas of the University. This representation also leads onto a national level with the sole purpose to ensure that your beliefs and ideas are acted upon. Another aspect of my role within the student union is education. This includes guidance, support and promotion from issues such as thinking of leaving your course to problems with your timetable. No issue too big or too small. At the heart of every decision made is the protection and improvement of your student experience.

Why did you choose SMU?
Being from Swansea it was a natural progression. What really appealed to me was the intimate environment and quality learning. SMU offers everything a student needs with quality lectures, high standards and a students union that champions its students.

What did you miss most from home?
As I’m originally from Swansea, I live at home meaning that I get the best of both worlds. I can go around my mates for a chill however still can go home for a good cooked dinner.

What’s your best memory of SMU?
Looking back I think my best memory of being at SMU was my first ever Summer Ball, it was such an amazing day. Being around my friends and having such a fantastic time listening to Florence & the Machine.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Well I actually don’t get much spare time as I also have another two jobs, which I have had since starting at SMU. Firstly I am a Swimming Teacher at the Wales National Pool Swansea, which has given me a chance to learn practical skills to help my degree. I am also a Swimming Coach at Swansea Valley Swimming Club.

What’s your plan for this year?
My plan this year is to ensure that students have the best student experience. I will achieve this through fair representation on a University level. I will also fight for the protection of our identity in amidst the talks surrounding mergers. The heart of every plan I have is to really make a difference for students.

What advice would you give to freshers?
1. Attend fresher’s fair… you get loads of freebies!
2. Make sure you are happy with your course, if you feel that it isn’t for you then we can do something about it as long you act quickly
3. Make new friends and try new things
4. Finally work hard, PLAY HARD

Why should new students get involved in Societies, Sports Teams, Course Reps and Council?
It’s quite simple really, to make changes for the better within this University, we need you. It’s only when students put their views and opinions forward change can be made.

Tell us something we didn’t know about you…
In August 2010 I appeared on the BBC ONE show 101 ways to leave a game show, which was filmed in Argentina, South America. After a tense battle round after round I won £10,000.
