An interview with Jamie:
So Jamie, what’s your role?
As your Student Activities Officer, my role is to ensure that a student’s social experience at Swansea Met are second to none whether that is from being a member of a sports team, society or attending one of our amazing social events.
Why did you choose SMU?
I chose SMU for a number of reasons, one was how highly regarded the University was for Illustration, another was purely location… a combination of a great night life, the love for rugby in the local area and being so close to the beach was irresistible.
What did you miss most from home?
It sounds cheesy but my Mums cooking!
What’s your best memory of SMU?
I honestly don’t think I can pick one particular moment… there have been so many! But being captain of the Rugby team for two years has been unforgettable.
What are you looking forward to this year?
The main thing I’m looking forward to this year is giving the student activities officer role a fresh new look and pushing the boundaries of what has previously been done for students.
What do you want to change this year?
As previously mentioned I want to push the boundaries of what a student activities officer at the met traditionally does… working hard to set up plenty of societies and giving all societies enough support and guidance that they can grow to their full potential. Similarly with the sports teams ensuring they have everything they need to run and perform to the best of their abilities along with putting on unforgettable events for all students, whether that be non alcoholic, mainstream or alternative events!
What’s on your must do list for freshers?
Firstly get your FRESHtival wristband, it’s going to be an unforgettable two weeks- I promise! As for a must do… I’d say just get involved with anything that comes your way at Uni- it’s all over before you know it!
What do you regret or feel you missed out on whilst at Uni?
My biggest regret is being ill for the first week of freshers in my first year, I really feel like I missed out on a life changing experience! Haha (although I think I have just about made up for it now!)
Why should new students get involved in Societies, Sports Teams, Course Reps and Council?
Because it’s the best way to really throw yourself fully into student life and make friends!
What is the best Swansea Met SU event you have ever attended?
Summer Ball 2010… Florence and the machine… need I say more…
Tell us something we didn’t know about you...
When travelling in Fiji, the Fijian family I was staying with had a baby and they gave him my full name James Muir. It is the greatest honour and I feel so privileged!
